Parents:  There will be a test next Wednesday over Weather.  Please make sure your child is using both their study guide and their journals to study for the test.  Students will be turning in their study guide next Wednesay for a grade, so it should be complete no later than this Friday.  Students have also been recording weather data on a chart and this will be collected as well next Wednesday.

Monday:  Students leaned about fronts today (cold, warm, stationary, occluded).  They were given a handout that describes what happens during each of these fronts and directions on how to make a tri-arama showing each front.  The tri-aramas need to be drawn, labeled, described and colored.  They are due Wednesday.

No social studies this week, we will begin Rome next week.

Parents:  We are beginning a unit on weather.  Students have been given a study guide they need to complete daily and will turn in at the end of the unit.  It has both vocabulary and concept building questions, so please make sure to ask your child each day what they learned about weather and how much of their study guide they have completed.  Students need to review the concepts studied each day.

Monday:  STudents began weather today and learned about the layers of our atmosphere.  They had to respond in their journals to “How weather affects them.”  They could not repeat the same idea more than once (since they only needed to get down 5 answers).  For example if they said weather affected what they wore, they could not go on to tell specific things about clothing they would wear differently. Students began filling out some of the vocabulary on their study guide.  Journal is due Tuesday.

Tuesday:  Students learned about air pressure and winds today.  They were to complete part of their study guides that dealt with air pressure, atmospheric layers, and wind.  Students were given a weather data chart and began filling in information about various aspects of weather today.  They will update this chart for the next 5-7 days.  If students are absent, they will need to get the missing information from the teacher or from another student.

Wednesday:  Students will continue with the lesson from Tuesday about wind and air pressure.  They need to continue working at completing their study guides.  Students also answered the following question in their journals:  “How does the uneven heating of earth’s atmosphere cause wind?”  Students must answer this question both in essay and by using a visual to illustrate the concept.  Students updated their weather chart.  Due Thursday.

Thursday:  Students will review the water cycle from what they learned in 5th grade.  They will identify three types of clouds and explain how they relate to weather prediction.  Students will complete an exit slip at the end of class of what they have learned during class time.

Friday:  Students will continue with the lesson from Thursday and review how heat energy is transferred within the water cycle.  In their journals, students will diagram, label and explain how heat energy is transferred within the water cycle.  Due Monday.
